income tax

UK/ˈɪnˌkʌm tæks/US/ˈɪnˌkʌm tæks/
nounB2Not compared — the two pools are counted one word at a time, so a phrase has no score

Income tax is the share of earnings taken by the state. Pay income tax, the income tax rate, cut income tax.

Britain introduced it in 1799 as a temporary measure to fund a war and has never removed it. It is charged in bands, so a higher rate applies only to the income above each threshold, which almost everybody misunderstands.
