Indirect means not going straight to the point or the place. An indirect route, an indirect question, indirect costs.
In grammar, indirect speech reports what somebody said without quoting it, which shifts the tense back a step. In business, indirect costs are the ones that cannot be traced to a single product, such as rent and heating.
