Other forms: installations
An installation is the setting up of equipment — or a work of art made for a particular space. The word does both jobs.
The practical sense covers boilers, kitchens and software, so installation costs and an installation engineer are ordinary business terms. The art sense arrived in the 1960s and means a work built into a room rather than hung on the wall, which is why an installation cannot usually be moved without being remade. The military has a third sense, where an installation is a base or facility. The verb is install.
1nounactThe act of putting equipment in place and setting it up.
