An insurance agent is a person who arranges cover against loss. They sell policies and explain the small print, or fail to.
The distinction between an agent and a broker matters, since an agent works for one insurer and a broker searches the market on your behalf. Comparison websites have taken over much of the work. The person who assesses a claim afterwards is a loss adjuster, and they work for the insurer too, which is worth knowing before any conversation with one.
