internet

UK/ˈɪn.təˌnɛt/US/ˈɪn.(t)ɚˌnɛt/
nounA2+Common in everyday speech and writing · #3,157 of 15,258neutral

The internet is the world-spanning connection between all computers everywhere. On the internet, internet access, internet speed.

It is the network and the web is one thing running on it, along with email and everything else — the two words are used interchangeably and are not the same. It has no owner and no centre, which is what makes it hard to switch off. Note that the name is short for internetwork.
