jamaica

UK/d͡ʒəˈmeɪ.kə/US/d͡ʒəˈmeɪ.kə/
nounB1+Common in everyday speech and writing · #4,307 of 15,258leans written

Jamaica is the Caribbean island of reggae music and record-breaking sprinters. Go to Jamaica, born in Jamaica, Jamaica's coast.

It is the third largest island in the Caribbean, independent since 1962, and its cultural output is out of all proportion to its size — reggae, ska and dancehall all began there, and its sprinters have dominated the hundred metres for two decades. Jamaican Patois is an English-based creole spoken alongside standard English. Note Jamaican as the adjective and the demonym.
