jigsaw puzzle

UK/ˈdʒɪɡsɔː ˌpʌzəl/US/ˈdʒɪɡsɔː ˌpʌzəl/
nounB1Not compared — the two pools are counted one word at a time, so a phrase has no score

A jigsaw puzzle is a picture cut into pieces to be fitted together. Do a jigsaw puzzle.

The first ones were maps cut up to teach geography to children in the eighteenth century. A jigsaw puzzle is now cut by a press rather than a saw, and the name has outlived the tool.
