Junk mail is unwanted advertising that arrives through the door. Pizza menus, estate agent leaflets, and a charity bag once a fortnight.
It is delivered addressed or unaddressed, and the unaddressed sort comes with the post because the delivery service is paid to bring it. It can be stopped, which few people realise, by opting out with the mail preference service. The phrase transferred to email long ago, though spam is the commoner word there and filters now catch most of it.
