kickboard

nounB2Very rare — outside the 30,000 commonest English words, so you will meet it in writing rather than in speechToo rare in one of the two pools to compare — fewer than 20 uses in speech or in writing

A kickboard is a float held to practise leg movements. Swim with a kickboard.

Holding it takes the arms out of the stroke so the legs have to do the work. A kickboard also fixes the head position, which is half of what it teaches.

“Twenty lengths with a kickboard and he could barely walk.”

kickboard is a float.

Where it comes from

Kick plus board. Coaches disagree about it, since a kickboard holds the shoulders higher than a real stroke does and can teach a hip position nobody wants.
