lasagna

UK/ləˈzɑː.njə/US/ləˈzæn.jə/
nounA2+Common in everyday speech and writing · #4,373 of 15,258mostly spoken

Lasagna is flat pasta baked in layers with sauce and cheese. Make lasagna, a tray of lasagna, vegetarian lasagna.

The word is one sheet in Italian and lasagne is the plural, so Italians order the plural and Americans the singular — both spellings are correct English. It is among the oldest pasta shapes recorded. The Greek behind it names a cooking pot.

Where it comes from

Italian lasagna comes from Latin lasanum, a cooking pot, from Greek lasanon, a stand for a pot.

  2. English, today

    lasagna

Borrowed from Italian lasagna. From Italian lasagna (and its plural lasagne), possibly from Vulgar Latin lasania, from Latin lasanum (“cooking pot”), from Ancient Greek λάσανον (“trivet or stand for a pot”). Others argue the lasagna originally derived from the Arabic لَوْزِينَج (“almond cake”).
