layers

UK/ˈleɪ.əz/US/ˈleɪ.ɚz/
nounB1+2 meaningsCommon in everyday speech and writing · #5,465 of 15,258leans written

Layers are hair cut to different lengths so it falls with movement. Get layers, long layers, layers round the face.

Cutting the hair at different lengths removes weight and lets it move rather than hanging as one mass, which is why thick hair is layered and fine hair often is not. Face-framing layers are the shorter ones at the front. Note layered as an adjective; and that layers in the general sense means anything stacked — layers of clothing, layers of meaning.
