Other forms: layovers
A layover is the waiting time at a middle airport between two flights. A four-hour layover, a long layover, an overnight layover.
It is the American term; British English usually says stopover, and airlines distinguish a connection of a few hours from a stopover of a day or more, which some carriers allow free of charge. For crew, a layover is the rest period away from base, which is regulated by law. Note that a long layover can be worth choosing, since some airports allow a free city tour.
