To lie down is to put your body flat on a bed or the ground. Horizontal, and usually for a while.
It works without an object, and the noun a lie-down means a short rest, which is what a British person suggests for almost any ailment. The verb lie is irregular and confusing, since the past is lay, which is also the present of a different verb meaning to put something down. There is a figurative use in taking something lying down, which means accepting an injustice without protest.
