lifesaving

nounB2+Occasional — familiar, but not everyday · #11,462 of 15,258leans written

Lifesaving is the skills of rescuing somebody from drowning. A lifesaving award, lifesaving training, a lifesaving club.

The first rule taught is reach or throw rather than go, because a drowning person will pull a rescuer under without meaning to. It is also a competitive sport in Australia and Britain, with races over the skills themselves.
