Lignite is a soft brown coal of poor quality. Burn lignite, a lignite mine, lignite deposits.

It holds a great deal of water and gives less heat than hard coal while producing more carbon dioxide, which makes it the worst fuel in common use. Germany and Poland still burn enormous quantities of it.
