limescale

nounC1Very rare — outside the 30,000 commonest English words, so you will meet it in writing rather than in speechToo rare in one of the two pools to compare — fewer than 20 uses in speech or in writing

Limescale is the hard white deposit hard water leaves behind. Descale the kettle, limescale in the pipes, limescale round the tap.

It is calcium carbonate dropped out of the water by heat, which is why kettles and boilers suffer worst. A millimetre of limescale on a heating element costs several per cent of its efficiency, and vinegar removes it.
