limestone

UK/ˈlaɪmˌstəʊn/US/ˈlaɪmˌstoʊn/
nounB2+Occasional — familiar, but not everyday · #10,412 of 15,258mostly written

Other forms: limestones

Limestone is a pale rock formed from ancient sea shells. Limestone cliffs, a limestone quarry, built of limestone.

It is made of the compacted remains of shells and coral, so a cliff of it is a graveyard of an ancient sea. Rainwater slowly dissolves it, which is why caves, gorges and sinkholes form in limestone country and nowhere else.
