The living room is where the family sits, talks and watches television. The room the sofa points into.
British English has a small class minefield here, since living room, sitting room, lounge and front room all name the same space and each says something about the speaker. Drawing room is the grandest and now nearly extinct. American English says living room without any of the freight. The word arrived in the twentieth century as parlour, with its funeral associations, fell out of use.
