Long-distance means covering or reaching a great distance. A journey, a call, or a relationship.
It goes before a noun with a hyphen, so a long-distance runner, a long-distance lorry driver and a long-distance footpath. The telephone sense mattered enormously when long-distance calls cost real money and were kept short, which now takes explaining to anybody under thirty. A long-distance relationship is one conducted mostly at a distance, and the phrase is understood everywhere.
