mackerel

UK/ˈmæk(ə)ɹəl/US/ˈmæk(ə)ɹəl/
nounB2Common in everyday speech and writing · #5,747 of 15,258neutral

Other forms: mackerels

Mackerel is an oily sea fish with striped skin. Smoked mackerel, grilled mackerel, a shoal of mackerel.

It is one of the cheapest sources of the long-chain omega-three fats that salmon is praised for, and it is far more sustainable than most large fish. It spoils faster than white fish because of the oil. A mackerel sky is one patterned like its markings.
