mango

UK/ˈmæŋɡəʊ/
nounB2Common in everyday speech and writing · #6,545 of 15,258neutral

Other forms: mangoes, mangos

A mango is the sweet golden tropical fruit with a big flat stone. A ripe mango, cut the mango, mango juice.

It is the most eaten fruit in the world, and India grows about half of them. The stone is flat and clings, which is why the standard way to cut one is two cheeks either side of it. It is related to the cashew and to poison ivy, and the skin can irritate.

Built from

  • *mām · dra-sou-pro — mango tree
  • *kāy · dra-pro — unripe fruit

Borrowed from Portuguese manga. Portuguese manga, from Malayalam മാങ്ങ / Tamil மாங்காய், possibly via Malay mangga, ultimately from dra-sou-pro mām (“unripe mango”), a compound of mām (“mango tree”) + kāy (“unripe fruit”). First used for the fruit as early as the 1580s and the tree by the 1670s. The etymology of the -o ending is not certain.
