markup

UK/ˈmɑː(ɹ)k.ʌp/

Other forms: markups

A markup is the amount added to cost to arrive at the selling price. A fifty per cent markup, the markup on wine, work out the markup.

It is not the same as margin, and the confusion costs businesses money: markup is measured against cost and margin against the selling price, so a fifty per cent markup is a thirty-three per cent margin. In computing, markup means the tags that describe a document.
