Other forms: marts
A mart is a market or trading centre. A cattle mart, the mart on Tuesday, take them to the mart.
In Ireland and parts of northern Britain, the mart is the livestock auction and is a social institution as much as a commercial one. In American shop names, mart is a common ending: a discount mart. It is a shortened form of market and is now chiefly regional or commercial. Note that the mart and the market are the same word, with mart the older and shorter version that never quite died out.
