megapixel

nounB2Very rare — outside the 30,000 commonest English words, so you will meet it in writing rather than in speech — pixel sits at #13,543leans written

Other forms: megapixels

A megapixel is a million of the tiny squares that make up an image. A twelve megapixel camera, more megapixels, the megapixel count.

It has been the wrong thing to shop by for twenty years, since the lens and the sensor size matter more. Beyond about twelve, a megapixel buys you cropping room rather than a better picture.
