metabolism

UK/mɪˈtab.ə.lɪz.əm/US/məˈtæb.əˌlɪz.əm/

Other forms: metabolisms

Metabolism is the speed at which your body burns food into energy. A fast metabolism, slow metabolism, boost your metabolism.

Most of it goes on doing nothing — keeping a body alive at rest accounts for the large majority of the energy used, and exercise is a smaller share than people expect. Differences between individuals are real but much smaller than diet advertising suggests.
