middle-aged

UK/ˌmɪdl̩ˈeɪd͡ʒd/US/ˌmɪdl̩ˈeɪd͡ʒd/
adjectiveB1neutral

Middle-aged means somewhere between about forty and sixty. The definition moves upwards as the person using it gets older.

That is only half a joke, since surveys show people consistently place the start of middle age just beyond wherever they are. The phrase middle-aged spread names the weight that arrives with a slowing metabolism. It goes before a noun with a hyphen. The noun is middle age, written as two words, and midlife is the modern alternative, chiefly in the phrase midlife crisis.
