molarity

nounC2Very rare — outside the 30,000 commonest English words, so you will meet it in writing rather than in speechToo rare in one of the two pools to compare — fewer than 20 uses in speech or in writing

Molarity is how many molecules of a substance sit in a litre. Calculate the molarity, a molarity of one, the molarity of the solution.

It is measured in moles per litre, and a mole is a fixed enormous number of particles chosen so the mass in grams matches the atomic weight. Temperature changes it slightly, since a litre expands when warm.

molarity in the wild

  • Molar concentration (also called amount-of-substance concentration or molarity) is the number of moles of solute per liter of solution.

    Molar concentration

  • In chemistry, the most commonly used unit for molarity is the number of moles per liter, having the unit symbol mol/L or mol/dm3 (really (mol/m3)/1000) in SI units.

    Molar concentration

  • The number ratio can be related to the various units for concentration of a solution such as molarity, molality, normality, etc.

    Colligative properties

  • The factor binds osmolarity to molarity and osmolality to molality.

    Van 't Hoff factor

  • The osmolarity of a solution is usually expressed as Osm/L (pronounced "osmolar"), in the same way that the molarity of a solution is expressed as "M" (pronounced "molar").
