motherland

UK/ˈmʌð.ə.lænd/US/ˈmʌðɚˌlænd/
nounC1Occasional — familiar, but not everyday · #10,777 of 15,258neutral

The motherland is the country of your birth, spoken of with warm devotion. Return to the motherland, defend the motherland, the call of the motherland.

Which of motherland and fatherland a language uses is a matter of tradition rather than logic: Russian and Indian English say motherland, and German and Dutch say fatherland. Both are words of a certain kind of patriotism and are rarely neutral.
