mutt

UK/mʌt/US/mʌt/
nounB2Very rare — outside the 30,000 commonest English words, so you will meet it in writing rather than in speech — mutter sits at #11,059leans spokeninformal · an editor’s judgement

Other forms: mutts

A mutt is a dog of no particular breed. Said with rough affection, or with mild scorn.

Mongrel is the neutral British word and mutt is the friendlier American one, and crossbreed is what a vet writes when the parents are known. There is a real health argument here, since mixed ancestry generally means fewer inherited problems than a narrowly bred pedigree. The word is informal throughout. Applied to a person it is a mild insult and usually a joking one.
