nicotine

UK/ˈnɪkətiːn/US/ˈnɪkətiːn/
nounB1+Common in everyday speech and writing · #6,460 of 15,258neutral

Nicotine is the addictive poison found in tobacco. Nicotine patches, nicotine addiction, high in nicotine.

It is what makes smoking hard to stop, but it is not what causes the cancer — that comes from the tar and the products of burning. This is why nicotine replacement is recommended: it treats the addiction without the smoke. It is a potent insecticide.
