nightstand

nounB1+Occasional — familiar, but not everyday · #8,938 of 15,258mostly spoken

Other forms: nightstands

A nightstand is the little table beside your bed for a lamp and a book. On the nightstand, a wooden nightstand, clear the nightstand.

This is the American word; British English says bedside table or bedside cabinet. What is on it is a fair picture of a person — the book, the glass of water, the things nobody else sees. It came from a stand for a chamber pot.
