outback

US/ˈaʊtbæk/
nounB2+Occasional — familiar, but not everyday · #8,607 of 15,258neutral

The outback is the remote inland country of Australia. Live in the outback, drive into the outback, the outback towns.

It has no fixed boundary and is defined by remoteness rather than by geography — you are in the outback when help is a long way off. The Royal Flying Doctor Service exists because of it, and it is the largest such operation in the world.
