An oven mitt is the thick glove that lets you hold a burning-hot tray. Padded, heat-proof, and always only one of them findable.
The padding works by trapping air, which conducts heat badly, so a thin mitt is worse than useless and a damp one is dangerous, since water carries heat straight through. British English usually says oven glove, and the double version joined by a strip is what most kitchens have. Silicone versions grip better and cannot be washed as easily.
