overseas

UK/ˌəʊvəˈsiːz/US/ˌoʊvɚˈsiːz/
adverbB22 meaningsCommon in everyday speech and writing · #3,897 of 15,258leans written

Overseas means across the sea from where you are. Live overseas, an overseas student, overseas markets.

It works as an adverb and as an adjective before a noun. It is the standard British word for abroad in official and business contexts: overseas territories, overseas aid, overseas visitors. Americans tend to say abroad or international. Note that overseas is used even where no sea is crossed, and that its meaning depends entirely on who is speaking — everywhere is overseas from somewhere.

Where it comes from

The word is over plus seas, formed in English on the model of overland and overhead. It became common in the nineteenth century with empire and trade, and it is one of the plainest examples of geography built into vocabulary.

From earlier oversea, equivalent to oversea + -s. Compare West Frisian oerseesk, Dutch overzees, German Übersee, Danish oversøisk.
