owner

UK/ˈəʊnə/US/ˈoʊnɚ/
nounA2Very common — you will meet it every day · #1,346 of 15,258leans written

Other forms: owners

An owner is somebody who owns something. The owner of the house, a dog owner, change of owner.

Ownership is a bundle of rights rather than one thing — the right to use, to exclude others, to sell — and different systems divide the bundle differently, which is why leasehold and freehold both count as owning. Note that own as a verb was formed backwards from owner, which is an unusual history.
