ozone

UK/ˈəʊzəʊn/US/ˈoʊzoʊn/
nounB2+Common in everyday speech and writing · #5,759 of 15,258neutral

Ozone is the high gas layer that shields the planet from burning rays. The ozone layer, a hole in the ozone, ozone depletion.

High up it protects and at ground level it is a pollutant that damages lungs — the same molecule, judged by where it is. The hole over Antarctica is slowly closing after the Montreal Protocol banned the chemicals that caused it, the most successful environmental treaty there is.

Built from

  • ὄζω · Ancient Greek — I smell

From German Ozon, coined 1840 by Christian Friedrich Schönbein, from Ancient Greek ὄζον, neuter participle of ὄζω (“I smell”), in reference to its pungent odour. The “fresh air” sense is from an erroneous former belief that seaweed contains and releases ozone.
