panama

UK/ˈpænəmɑː/US/ˈpænəmɑ/
nounB1+Common in everyday speech and writing · #3,933 of 15,258leans written

Panama is the narrow country whose famous canal joins two oceans. Travel to Panama, the Panama Canal, eastern Panama.

The canal cuts about thirteen thousand kilometres off the voyage round South America, and ships are lifted twenty-six metres by locks to cross a lake. Because the isthmus twists, a ship going from the Atlantic to the Pacific travels south-east. A Panama hat is made in Ecuador.
