parents

UK/ˈpɛə.ɹənts/US/ˈpɛɹ.ənts/
nounA1One of the most common words in English · #316 of 15,258neutral

Your parents are your mother and father together. My parents, both parents, parents' evening.

The word covers whoever fills the role — birth, adoptive, step — and legal parenthood and biological parenthood are separate questions that do not always match. Parents' evening is the British school meeting, and the apostrophe goes after the s. Note parenting, which is the activity and a fairly recent word; and single parent, which is now the neutral term where earlier ones were not.
