A parking lot is the open area where drivers leave their cars. Painted bays, and somebody always parked across two of them.
This is the American term, and British English says car park, which covers both open ground and multi-storey buildings. The vocabulary differs further, since Americans park in a parking garage and the British in a multi-storey. A song about paving paradise to put up a parking lot has done more for the phrase than any planning document.
