A pilot episode is the first episode, made to test whether a series works. Shoot a pilot, the pilot was picked up, an unaired pilot.
Most are never broadcast, and a pilot episode often looks different from the series that follows, because parts get recast and sets rebuilt once it is commissioned. A pilot episode exists to persuade a broadcaster rather than to entertain an audience.
