Other forms: polos
Polo is a team game played on horseback with long mallets and a small ball. Four a side, a very large field, and a change of pony between chukkas.
It came to Britain from India in the nineteenth century and kept its reputation as an expensive sport. Water polo is the swimming-pool version with no horses at all. The word also names clothing, since a polo shirt has a collar and a few buttons and a polo neck is a high folded collar, called a turtleneck in America. Marco Polo is unrelated, being a surname.
