ponytail

US/ˈpoʊniˌteɪl/
nounA2+Common in everyday speech and writing · #8,328 of 15,258leans spoken

Other forms: ponytails

A ponytail is hair gathered and tied at the back of the head. It hangs and swings exactly the way the name suggests.

It is the most practical way to keep long hair out of the way, which is why it belongs to sport, cooking and hospitals as much as to fashion. A high ponytail sits on the crown and a low one at the nape. The word is one word. English also has the pigtail, which is plaited, and bunches, which are two ponytails at the sides.
