A prepaid card is loaded with money in advance and spends only what is on it. When it is empty, it stops.
It requires no credit check and no bank account, which is why it is sold to travellers, to teenagers and to people who have been refused ordinary banking. Currency cards for holidays work the same way and lock in an exchange rate. The disadvantage is fees, since loading, using and withdrawing can each carry one, and the small print repays reading.
1nounprepaid cardA payment card loaded with money before use.
