UK/ˈpʌblɪʃɪŋ/US/ˈpʌblɪʃɪŋ/
nounB2Common in everyday speech and writing · #4,276 of 15,258mostly written

Publishing is the business of producing books, papers and other writing for sale. Work in publishing, academic publishing, the publishing industry.

The trade is about choosing, editing and selling rather than printing, which is a separate business. Self-publishing has taken the gatekeeping out of it, for better and worse.
