quickstep

nounB2+Rare in speech; mostly a word you read · #13,551 of 15,258neutral

Other forms: quicksteps

A quickstep is a brisk light-footed ballroom dance. Dance the quickstep, a fast quickstep, the quickstep is next.

It grew out of the foxtrot in the 1920s when bands played faster than dancers could manage the slow steps, so the dance was speeded up and the hops and skips came in. It is the fastest of the standard ballroom dances. Note that the compound is quick plus step and was a military march step first.
