Other forms: ratings

A rating is a number showing how strong a player is. A chess rating, gain rating points, a rating of 1800.

The Elo system, designed for chess, works by expected result: beating a stronger player gains more than beating a weaker one, and the numbers settle so that a two-hundred-point gap predicts about a three-in-four win. It has since been borrowed by nearly every competitive game. Note credit rating; and that in the Royal Navy a rating is a sailor below officer rank.
