A raw file is the unprocessed data straight off a camera sensor. Shoot in raw file format, convert the raw file, a raw file takes more space.
It keeps far more information in the highlights and shadows than a finished image does, which is what makes it worth the space. A raw file must be developed before anybody else can see it properly.
