A read receipt is the mark showing your message has been seen. Turn off read receipts, the read receipt appeared, no read receipt.
It changed how messages work: once the sender knows a message was read, silence becomes an answer, and that is why turning read receipts off is itself a statement. Some apps make the setting mutual, so switching it off costs you the same information.
