Refined means polished, elegant and free of coarseness. Refined manners, a refined palate, refined taste.
Of a person it praises manners and judgement, and it can sound faintly snobbish. Of a substance it is technical and neutral: refined sugar, refined oil, refined flour — meaning processed to remove everything but the target. Of a method it means improved through repeated adjustment. Note refine, refinement; and that refined foods are the ones nutritionists warn about, which is the same word doing opposite work.
