Rock-solid means utterly firm and completely dependable. It will not shift, and it will not let you down.
The physical sense is straightforward — a rock-solid foundation, ground frozen rock-solid overnight — but the word does most of its work on things you cannot touch. A rock-solid alibi is one nobody can break; a rock-solid defence, a rock-solid reputation, a friend who has been rock-solid throughout. What it always means is that the thing has been tested and did not move. It is written with a hyphen before a noun and often without one after a verb.
